The Whiz Kid with the best nickname in Phillies history—if not the annals of baseball—"Puddin' Head" Jones just so happens to be a valuable autograph rarity. So much so that just three of his single-signed balls have ever surfaced in the past 20 years at major auction houses, with the finest example selling for nearly $1,000 in 2009. A fan favorite at the hot corner, Jones enjoyed his top season in the 1950 run to the pennant, with career highs of 25 HRs, 163 hits, 88 RBIs and 100 runs. In the 4-game World Series, he collected a double, 3 singles and a run scored. Puddin' Head died in 1983, before the autograph boom really took off in earnest. On this fresh-to-the-hobby discovery, Jones ("8-9") occupies his own panel of a creamy-toned Official League ball, and he's joined by Harry Anderson ("6-7") and Chuck Harmon ("6"). All three signatures are inscribed to "Tess" and, based on Harmon's brief stay in Philly, likely date to 1957. Auction LOA from JSA.
