The middle portion of the legendary “Tinker to Evers to Chance” double play combination, Hall of Fame keystone sacker Johnny Evers tried his hand at managing the Cubs in 1921. “Crab” was fired in August of that year and was one of many managers to helm the Cubs during that decade, suggesting the issue was not necessarily Evers. Johnny Evers is the subject of this December 7, 1920 honors banquet invitation with original letter and the front part of the original envelope. The 3-1/2 x 6” invitation presents mid-grade condition with only a light crease and peripheral wear. The envelope is no longer intact as the reverse is not present and small fragments are missing; the letter presents in mid-grade condition with deference to three holes punched along the left spine and three small paper tears along one of the three included folds. An excellent collectible for any Chicago Cubs enthusiast, this unique offering is all addressed to Edward Churan.

Letter reads:

Dear Friend,

Knowing you to be a lover of clean sports and an advocate of Base Ball, and also knowing you to be an admirer of “Johnny Evers” who comes to us as Manager of the Cubs, we take the liberty of enclosing herewith tickets for the banquet given in his honor at Hotel La Salle, December 7th, 1920.

Kindly make remittance to John C. Ryan, Treasurer, 418-118 North La Salle Street, not later than December 4th.

Yours very truly,
