The 1939 Baseball Centennial first day cover (FDC) series kicked off on June 12, 1939, also known as the “First Day Of Issue” as noted on the included envelopes. Presented is a 1939 Cooperstown FDC signed by the wife of Lou Gehrig from that initial release. Gehrig’s wife signed the bottom left corner with an (“8-9”) potency black fountain penning. The 6-1/2 x 3-1/2" mid-grade envelope presents well given its age with light creasing and moderate residue on the reverse of the collectible. A “3 cent” baseball centennial stamp appropriately decorates the top right corner. This postcard was signed on a day where ‘The Iron Horse” was headed to the Mayo Clinic, which would break the news to Gehrig later in the week that he had the rare muscular disease known as ALS. Auction LOA from JSA.
