Based on its "1926" period notation and the American Association (Hickey) stamping, it may well be that this ball hails from a slated June 16th exhibition contest between the Yankees and the American Association's St. Paul Saints. SABR historian Stew Thornley writes, "Fans got the chance to watch Ruth launch some long balls in batting practice, although the game was rained out. Earlier in the day, a huge crowd gathered outside the Pioneer Press and Dispatch building in downtown St. Paul as Ruth hurled autographed baseballs out a window of the building." The scuffed, shellacked, medium-toned sphere features a bold, beautiful "7-8" signature, which appears to have been protected over the years as it does not exhibit the general wear seen on the rest of the surface. Full LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve (estimated value $10,000-$20,000).
