For as many baseballs and photos as Babe Ruth signed in his lifetime, it's somewhat surprising that so few of them feature inscriptions of "Merry Xmas" or "Merry Christmas." By our count, just two such balls have reached the auction block, and we're not aware of another photo example (though some of course are dated December 25). The offered rarity is a dynamite swinging pose with background flag bunting that suggests Opening Day or World Series play. (Also of note are the photographers so near to home plate.) Ruth's inscription rates "8-9" and his signature is "6-7". Because of the complexity of the stadium scene and all the dark-and-light image areas, the overall wear and restoration is subtle and not obvious at first glance. However, there is creasing throughout, along with a lengthy horizontal edge tear (crossing through the inscription) that is neatly sealed on the reverse with tape, and two small discreet spots of color touch-up in a dark background area at center left. Nevertheless, this is a magnificent display, nicely matted and framed with a "Babe Ruth" plaque to measure 14x17. Full LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve (estimated value: $3,500-$5,500).
