Thirty-five years after leading the Phillies to their first World Series, 63-year-old Grover Alexander was invited back to witness the Whiz Kids in the 1950 Fall Classic. He sat in the Yankee Stadium press box next to Sporting News reporter Fred Lieb for Game 3, and also attended Game 4. Then he returned home to St. Paul, Nebraska, and promptly answered his fan mail, sending this autograph-request reply on October 16th with the compassionate message, "Am sorry for the Phillies." Two weeks later, possibly of a heart attack, possibly of an epileptic seizure, he died in his St. Paul hotel room. We are aware of only one other signed GPC from the same date, and no others afterward, making this one of the final autographs of Alexander's life. His is a bold "8" signature. The 5-1/2 x 3-1/4" GPC rates VG-EX. Full LOA from JSA.
