Diamond Jim burst on the scene in 1960 and 1961 with two dynamite seasons. Overshadowed by Maris and Mantle in '61, Gentile quietly slammed 46 HRs and tied Roger with a league-leading 141 RBIs, good for third in the MVP voting behind those M&M Boys. This Spalding jersey features Gentile's "8" signature (Auction LOA from JSA) and shows light wear with an original "laughing bird" patch and a non-functioning zipper. According to Phil Wood's LOA, "In the collar is a small gray felt strip embroidered '60 4 44' representing year, number and size. The manufacturer's tag is stitched onto the outer left shirttail, above a chain-stitched 'Set 1 1961.' This anomaly (the collar tag identifies the shirt as a 1960 issue, and the tail stitching ID's it as 1961) is uncommon, but not extraordinary. The logical explanation: the wear on a road shirt from late in the 1960 season was deemed to be light enough to be reused in 1961." Wood's analysis concludes, "[Gentile's] game-used gear is relatively scarce. I've seen an A's vest and a '63 Baltimore home jersey over the past 40 years and that's about it. This shirt, from his most productive seasons with the Orioles, is, in my expert opinion, genuine. The broken zipper is a minor flaw and easily fixed; this jersey represents a major part of franchise history."
