Each card has been graded 20 FR 1.5 by SGC. These extremely scarce, large-sized inserts from Monarch Tobacco Works feature lithographic images of prominent Native Americans in breathtaking color. Although a number of products’ manufacturers paid tribute to the nation’s highest-profile Native American leaders during this time – while many of those figures, incidentally, were still alive – few of those efforts came close to the sheer majesty captured in N570’s outstanding portraiture. These inserts’ inherent style, their premium dimensions, and their association with a relatively obscure brand of tobacco have cemented the cards’ status as “elite” collectibles, and the achievement of a full set stands as a daunting hobby challenge. Includes: Graded
SGC 20 FR 1.5: 4 cards w/Black Hawk, Geronimo, Keokuk and Red Cloud. As is typical, SGC has wreaked numerical carnage in its assignment of grades to these treasures of Americana. Much of the “downgrading” perpetrated against these items was likely (and mistakenly) grounded in the presence on each card of a period backstamping. This inscription refers to the same business concern on each card, and its placement was a routine feature of the time’s advertising methods: in a very real sense, this perceived “defacement” can be interpreted as an original and legitimate attribute of the card, not a cause for the imposition of demerit. An exceptional complete set, in nominally Fair condition.
