Sure there are rarer and more valuable baseball autographs, but none are more popular than Babe Ruth. Most would think it a real stretch to call a collection complete without a Ruth example. Those who do not wish to mortgage the farm to obtain an authenticated Babe ball take heart with this more affordable treasure. Though affected by several issues, this ancient orb has traveled through time with an attractive steel-tip fountain pen signature, which has long been covered with tape to retain dynamic (“6-7”) appeal.
The ball itself is tight and solid with fairly consistent toning except for sporadic abrasions and a patch of surface loss and a drilled hole on the south panel due to removal from a previous display case. These south panel conditions can be considered unobtrusive as barring some far-out form of display such as suspension from the ceiling, they will not be seen. Factory stampings have gone to that great inkwell in the sky and of course a ball without abrasions and tape would be more desirable, but such a ball would also cost three or more times as much. All in all this is a respectable and resilient Ruth autograph at a reasonable price. Full photo LOA from JSA.
Note: The LOA shows the Babe Ruth ball before the tape over the Sweet Spot penning had been removed. The tape has since been taken partially off, which the photographs currently reflect.
