Dealt to the Washington Senators right after their last-ever World Series appearance in 1933, career .310 hitter Johnny Stone spent the last five seasons of his 11-year career with distant also-ran teams, pushing his remarkable hitting exploits into relative obscurity. Each of his last four full seasons in D.C. saw Stone post .300+ batting averages, before tuberculosis forced his premature retirement at the age of 32. In recognition of their stricken star, the Senators held “Johnny Stone Day” on 9/17/39. This appealing tribute program (VG) was issued that day at Griffith Stadium with proceeds going to Stone. Scored neatly in pencil vs. the Detroit Tigers (the team that traded Stone for HOFer Goose Goslin), this reverent program features photos of Stone on the front and back covers, along with biographical text and career stats.
