Having made the transition from power pitcher to power-hitting everyday player in 1920, “Babe” Ruth stunned the baseball world with a tremendous breakout season that saw him set the record for home runs that year. Ruth’s larger than life persona was captured perfectly at the beginning of the following season with this 4/14/21 edition of “Mid-Week Pictorial” magazine. The front cover of this large format periodical is adorned with a gargantuan image of Ruth’s face on a ball with a crowd scene in the background. Looking like baseball’s answer to the “great and powerful Oz”, this magnificent photo is accompanied by a caption panel at bottom, which reads “”Play Ball!” “Babe” Ruth Mightiest of home-run hitters, who hopes this year to excel his record of 54 home runs made in 1920”. Of course Ruth answered in heroic fashion by swatting 59 dingers in 1921. Issued at a time when the "Bambino" was growing both his legend and attendance league-wide, this captivating antique publication makes for a great display piece, despite a split spine and a 6” horizontal tear radiating from the right edge to left edge of the letters on Ruth’s Yankees cap. In addition to these conditions, a somewhat ragged perimeter and a couple of smaller tears limit this magazine to a (FR) rating, however the photo image remains clear and attractive.
