Detailed description on our website.
“The Wizard of Menlo Park” casts a mighty collectible spell with this distinguished signed photograph. Taken c.1920 by photographer Walter Scott Shinn of N.Y., this stately 7x10 image of prolific inventor Thomas A. Edison (d.1931) makes an honorable display tribute to the man who gave us the motion picture camera, the phonograph and the electric light bulb.
This waist-up depiction is a masterful creation that makes excellent use of light and shadow to project a distinct dimensional quality with the subject’s head taking on a majestic aspect. A single crease on the top border, which does impact the image, relegates this mesmerizing photo to a technical (VG-EX) designation, though it presents a grade higher. Personalized as “To Samuel N Scovill”, Edison’s stylish fountain pen signature exhibits (“7”) potency on the bottom border. Full photo LOA from JSA.
Photographer Shinn’s copyright credit is printed at lower right of the image area. Though the exact date of this photo is undetermined, several sources note dealings between Edison and Shinn c.1918-1921.
